CRL News

January 21, 2010

First off, I’d like to thank you all for coming today.  The reason I’m speaking to you is to report that I’m ending my indefinite Leave of Absence and returning to my position running things around here.  I’d like to quash any rumors that my time away had anything to do with any medical condition, save occasional alcoholism.

Besides, pitchers and catchers report four weeks from today.

With that in mind, it’s time to catch up with some news.

Digging through my notes from last year’s draft, I came upon the item where we voted to have a scratch draft in 2013.  That means we’ll play the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons before throwing everyone back.  Please keep that in mind before signing any players to contracts.

On a related note, my notes do not specify whether we are throwing farm players back as well.  I cannot remember this fact from the 2003 scratch draft (I’ve killed a few brain cells since then).  But it’s something I think we should discuss.  On the one hand, it’s not truly a scratch draft if you are allowed to keep farm players.  However, if we allow farm players to be kept, it might keep some 2012 non-contenders interested enough to make a late-season trade.  The way I see it, we can do three things – elect to toss or keep farm players or table the motion.  We don’t have to decide this right away, but we need a decision before the start of the 2012 season.  Just throwing it out there to get thoughts.

I think the ownerinfo page on the CRL site http://www.c-r-l.org/ownerinfo/CRLADS.htm is pretty up to date, but it wouldn’t surprise me if I needed to make a couple of corrections (I already know Matt has a new address and I need to remove the editorial comment next to my wife’s name).  If you want anything changed, let me know so I can fix everything at once.  This is especially important in terms of phone numbers – if you want a work or cell number added/deleted/changed, etc.   (Incidentally, if you are wondering why I have the wives’ names, it so that, when you call up an owner asking for a trade and hear a woman’s voice, you are not stammering around trying to remember a name.)  I’m thinking of adding a “Notes” field with additional contact info like, Don’t call after 8, don’t call at work, doesn’t regularly check email, etc.  If you have a comment you like added, let me know.  By the way, I haven’t updated the owner info on the AllStarStats site in years, if something needs to be fixed for your team, let me know.

I’ve already update the rosters on the AllStarStats site.  What that means is that all option and L1 players from last season have already been released and all other players have had the number behind the L or S reduced by one.  The players with a contract of “O” are players entering their option year in 2010 and are the ones you have to decide (if you are keeping them) to sign or leave as option guys.

At the end of this newsletter is a list of players who are tied.  As you all know, you can only keep one player from each tied pair.  Keeping one now does not mean you have to keep him on Roster Freeze Day, it just reserves your right to keep him.  If the player you keep is on your reserve list, and you subsequently keep him on Roster Freeze Day, they you will owe a $5 activation fee.  There may be a couple of instances where you have a player on your reserve list that is not tied to anyone.  That is because the player he was tied to was released when I updated the rosters.  The reserve player is still on your roster on the AllStarStats site, but is not include in the list of tied pairs below.  Please get me the list of which player from each pair you want to keep by Monday, Feb 8.

Keeper restrictions are as follows:

Fraser can keep 11 players

Otis and Hutch – 12

Glenn and Dennis – 13

Marcus and Matt – 14

Everyone else can keep 15.

The draft is at Harrah’s again.  I think it’s the same room (we’ve already paid for it), but I’m not sure.  I’ll update everyone with the next newsletter.

Spencer, deciding the SOB moniker didn’t do his team any favors has elected to change his team name.  Henceforth (or at least until he changes his mind again) Team 6 will be known as “Multiple Scorgasms.”

If anyone else out there thinks a new name is in order, let me know by Roster Freeze Day.

Steve Torrens is trying to coordinate golf on Thursday, March 25 (the day before the draft).  Contact him if you are interested.

TIMELINE:

2/8 (Mon) – keepers from tied pairs due to Jim P.

3/1 (Mon) – $250 initial payment due to Glenn.  His address is:

8561 LaSalle St. # 53

Cypress, CA 90630

3/15 (Mon) – Roster Freeze Day.  No trading between this point and the draft.  (Sorry to put this in the middle of Spring Training, but I could be in the middle of a move and I need to give myself time to get the keepers in and still be able to give everyone a weekend to prepare.)

3/26 (Fri) – Draft ~ 10 AM.

Now back to our regularly-scheduled program.

Jim
